zeit–ton–passagen
eine öffentliche rundfunkinstallation in der welckerpassage
29.11.2017 – 30.09.2019

a public radio installation in the welckerpassage
29.11.2017 – 30.09.2019
daily 10:00 – 20:00
the radio installation “zeit–ton–passagen”, realised next to the world conference center bonn, represents a journey into the wonderful sound world of languages and radio signals. this sound installation by maia urstad was created in 2017 as part of her project-residence in bonn. for the realisation of “zeit–ton–passagen”, this year’s bonn hoeren co-operation partner deutsche welle (dw), opened its archive to the bonn city sound artist. from this enormous volume of audio material, maia urstad selected, edited and processed original radio recordings in 31 languages which dw has used in their broadcasts since the 1950s – these edited recordings now serve as the foundation for her 40-channel site-specific sound installation. 31 copper-coloured loudspeakers arrayed along the length of the tunnel in four rows invite guests to embark on a journey into the sound world of human languages – both those familiar and exotic. the composition explores the different melodies and rhythms that characterise the individual languages while also at times featuring clearly comprehensible announcements from diverse parts of the world where deutsche welle can still today or could at one time be received. in addition, now and then technical radio signals resound from small open black loudspeakers affixed to the wall opposite the 31 loudspeakers. finally, an additional drone-like compositional element that sonically reflects the changing mood at various hours of the day floats above it all.
