on my first exploratory tours in november 2013, in the first part of my residency as city sound artist, i discover bonn starting from the banks of the rhine. i move away from the river through small alleys, in to new residential developments, industrial areas and rural zones on the outskirts of the city, before ending up back at the rhine in the evenings. this wet, moving street is spanned by three bridges. at the same time three ferries offer their slowed-down and relaxed mode of crossing. still, one finds oneself wanting to change sides more often than is possible. maybe at one of the roads that dead-ends at the rhine in a sort of platform, overlooking beuel. beneath the platform at the end of kaiser-friedrich-strasse i feel the pronounced need, the great stone shell at my back, to go straight across the river. i resolve on the spot to build a further »bridge« – an imaginary arch and connection. some time later i am standing on the dike in beuel, directly across from the old fountain shell, also known as the »grotto«, as the crow flies. here, in thought, i work out the first acoustic and formal conditions for the installation.

the installation on the beueler dike in the rheinaustrasse: a cube accessible from two sides, opening out towards the rhine. side walls, the back side and the roof are closed with plywood. from this form, a wooden frame construction juts out in to the open, superimposing a sort of grid on to the image of the city and river landscape. inside the installation there is an additional room that resembles a pyramid cut in half. behind this half-room, four speakers have been mounted, projecting sounds in to the space through small holes. at times, the angular walls reflect the sounds, sending them trickling down towards the river. at the same time, the space receives the ambient sounds emanating from the river and the city. these sounds, captured during the development of the piece, are also the basis for the recorded and manipulated sounds of the river-spanning sound installation. the cube serves simultaneously as “sender” and “receiver”. it refers acoustically and tactually to the form on the opposite bank of the rhine, the grotto at the end of kaiser-friedrich-strasse, which has the appearance of a large reflector. in this vaulted form the intervention is purely an acoustic one. hidden loudspeakers send sounds to the dome, which in turn sends them, reflected, down towards the rhine.
