das august-macke-viertel wird zurzeit aufgrund städtebaulicher gegebenheiten nicht als integraler bestandteil der altstadt wahrgenommen, obwohl der stadtgrundriss und die architektur die gemeinsame entstehungsgeschichte mehr als verdeutlichen. das aus ende der 80er/anfang der 90er jahre stammende konzept zur verkehrsberuhigung und wohnumfeldverbesserung für die gesamte nordstadt wurde im bereich august-macke-viertel nicht umgesetzt mit der folge, dass das august-macke-viertel im vergleich zur übrigen altstadt als wohnstandort für breite schichten der bevölkerung deutlich an attraktivität verloren hat. im gegensatz zur altstadt werden die wohnbereiche beiderseits der bornheimer straße von der statistikstelle der stadt als soziales problemgebiet eingestuft. studenten des fachbereiches architektur der alanus hochschule für kunst und gesellschaft untersuchen gemeinsam mit ihrem professor willem-jan beeren und dem klangkünstler sam auinger das gewohnte und alltägliche erscheinungsbild und die wahrnehmung dieses urbanen quartiers. mit den ohren gedacht entstehen künstlerische interventionen und arbeiten welche die auditive situation von orten und architektonischen ensembles im viertel thematisieren und deren sozial-ökonomische wirkungszusammenhänge freilegen. eine reihe von audiominiaturen (für den kopfhörer raum) entstehen und dokumentieren die auditive recherche in diesem stadtteilforschungsprojekt. die fabrik 45 ist gastgeber, mitten im macke viertel gelegen dient sie während der recherche und entwicklungsphase als arbeits- und experimentier-raum, in weitere folge wird sie zum ausstellungs-, dokumentations- und öffentlichen diskursraum.

the august macke quarter is currently not perceived as an integral part of the old town due to construction and developmental issues, although the original city limits and shared architecture both testify strongly to their common origins and history. the traffic alleviation and urban renewal concepts for the entire north side from the late 80ies and early 90ies were not applied to the august macke quarter, with the consequence that the quarter has since become significantly less attractive as a place to live for large segments of the population when compared to the rest of the old town. in contrast to the old town, the residential neighborhoods on both sides of bornheimer straße have been designated as social problem areas by the city’s statistics department. together with sound artist sam auinger and their professor willem-jan beeren, students from the department of architecture of the alanus university of arts and social sciences will investigate the urban district’s familiar everyday appearance and how it is perceived. through thinking with their ears, they will come up with artistic interventions and pieces which treat the auditory situation of places and architectural ensembles in the quarter, exposing their socioeconomic context and influence. a series of audio miniatures (for the headphone room) will be assembled to document the auditory findings of this urban research project. fabrik 45 will host the project: situated right in the center of the macke quarter, it will serve as a workplace and laboratory during the research and development phase, and a space for exhibitions, documentation and public discourse afterwards.
