sonotopia – european student competition for sound art installation
in 2015, the beethovenstiftung für kunst und kultur der bundesstadt bonn (beethoven foundation for art and culture of the federal city of bonn) will add a new component to its bonn hoeren project, alongside the existing annual appointment of an international artist to serve as city sound artist bonn: introducing sonotopia – the european student competition for sound art installation. this annual competition by invitation for students of sound art will be realized in close cooperation with the beethovenfest bonn. the selected prizewinner will be presented to the public by unveiling with a new sound installation at the beethovenfest in september 2015.
the creation of a european prize for the promotion of young sound artists will give up-and-coming talents in the field of sound art both a greater visibility and audibility in the public sphere. sound art has been part of the curriculum at european art academies for some twenty years now. in this respect, the universities have not only reflected both the continually in-creasing integration of sound as a material for artistic composition, but also the development of sound art itself as a whole. germany has played a pioneering role in this development. in 1994, the first professorship for plastic/audiovisual art was created at the hbksaar in saarbrücken, and christina kubisch was chosen to fill the position. in the same year, ulrich eller also received a professorship in hannover for inter-disciplinary artistic production, which he has continued since 2004 as professor for sound sculpture and sound installation at the hbk braunschweig. these were followed by further educational institutions in europe, for instance in weimar, the hague, mulhouse, oxford and helsinki, among others.
sonotopia, the sole european competition for students of sound art, is endowed with a prize of 10,000 euros. the first-prize winner receives this sum for the realization of a new sound installation at the beethovenfest in bonn.
