the second day of the symposium zooms out from the focus on architecture and constructed space to the scale of the city context. when we conceive of the city as the sum of all activities and processes in interaction with physical and architectonic conditions, what role then does sound play in this scenic whole? according to raviv ganchrow sound emplace and hearing is sited. ambient listening formats a sense of surroundings by orienting us towards particular vibrational contexts. but what is the extent of an audible site? displacing sound from its imagined source of emission and situating it instead at the crossroads of events and contexts reveals a densely networked territory where the anecdotal and incidental coincide with socio-historical frameworks.the lecture will examine various approaches to sonic site through historical examples and experimental sound practices. the city sound artist bonn 2010 sam auinger describes a large part of his work as “thinking with the ears”. during his time in bonn, he devoted himself to the analysis of the city’s sonic particularities and their significance and intermediation. for four years, his piece “grundklang bonn” has been running in the bonner “hole”; it intervenes almost unnoticeably in the dense acoustic space of the square in front of the train station. how has it changed the perception of the place? new yorker sound art pioneer max neuhaus’ piece “times square” plays a key role in understanding the effects of such artistic stances. kabir carter places this work in the center of his presentation. what impact can sound art have in the urban context? what relevance should it have in the production of space and subjectivity? the geographer and sound researcher michael gallagher will explore these questions in his critical analysis of selected positions of artistic practice in comparison with the spatial theories of foucault, grosz and lefebvre.
