rental spot for sonic bikes: bonner schule, friedrichstraße 10, 53115 bonn

»zu bong« is a new sonic bike work made for bonn. mapped to the city center’s streets, from kölnstrasse in the north to botanischer garten in the south, from the rhine in the east to the kaiser-karl-ring in the west, visitors are invited to come and borrow one of these bikes and pedal through the streets to hear the music unfold in a manner determined by the journey they decide to take.
go and compose your own sonic narrative through layers of sounds recorded from the city’s life in april 2014, then processed and relocated into layers of shifting harmonies rooted around the city’s resonant frequencies. sonic cycling is not about going somewhere, but instead about moving through space on a bicycle that enfolds you in a music which changes as you go, transforming your streets in the process. rediscover your city.
the sonic bike is a musical instrument that uses two bike-mounted speakers to play locative music determined by the route chosen and the speed at which the cyclist pedals, thus transforming the cyclist in to a performer and passers-by in to audience members. instigated by composer/sound artist kaffe matthews, the sonic bike’s design has been evolving through a series of commissions since 2003, and through the work of the bicrophonic research institute (bri) it is continuing to develop in growing hubs of activity worldwide.
