philipp hawlitschek, winner of the first prize in the student competition for installation-based soundart bonn hoeren – sonotopia 2016, is realizing his exhibition “vollton & abton”, funded through the competition prize money and featuring new sound installations, in fabrik 45, an alternative gallery space in the august macke quarter on bonn’s north side. hawlitschek, a master class student in the area of soundart under professor andreas oldörp at hbk saarbrücken (saar college of fine arts), works with reduced means to investigate the space and time shaping qualities of sound at specific sites. hawlitschek doesn’t generate sounds by using loudspeakers or the like, instead preferring to work with kinetic and mechanical objects whose potential for sound is derived directly from the nature of the materials he employs. through the use of very quiet, constant sounds, hawlitschek manages to create acoustic situations at the edge of perception – threshold situations that are also characterized by their visual sensitivity. with his minimal interventions in fabrik 45, he succeeds in effecting a subliminal transformation of the space.
philipp hawlitschek:
“the basis of the installation is the space itself, with all its specific sonic and atmospheric conditions. with the help of various mechanical sound generators, the space’s pre-existing potential is put to use, with the objective of activating the space itself. in so doing, no use is made of loudspeakers – instead oscillating bars, rotating air and vibrating surfaces are employed, among other things. my hope is to achieve a soundscape that emerges from the space. like a finely sprayed mist, a fleeting scent, small differences, small movements are explored, ones that encounter us at the limits of our perception. they produce attentiveness. minimal events, which seem to elude us continually, which we can’t quite seem to possess with our senses, which we can’t hold onto. a sound flutters through our heads, all the way to the ceiling. our ears extend themselves. the space is slightly tinted. these things don’t unfold in time – they are time.”
the exhibition is a part of the project sonotopia – bonn hoeren 2016, funded by the beethovenstiftung für kunst und kultur der bundesstadt bonn. it is also made possible by the kind support of fabrik 45 and the beethovenfest bonn.
