KLANG–SPIEL
sound installation

this year, bonn hoeren is taking place in co-operation with theater bonn. the institution’s kammerspiele (the chamber theatre space) in bonn – bad godesberg will serve as the focal point of the work of the city sound artist bonn 2016, selected by the beethoven foundation: it is here that he will realise both a sound installation and a singular sound performance.
city sound artist bonn gordon monahan’s sound installation »KLANG–SPIEL« (»Sound-Play«) transforms the facade of the kammerspiele building in bad godesberg into an artistically animated tableau. the building, which would actually otherwise stand „mute“ during the theatre’s summer break, will be brought to life in an unusual fashion thanks to the installation’s subtle interplay between sound and movement. monahan’s »KLANG–SPIEL« is a small acoustic theatre that conceives of public space as an open space for encounters and seeks to activate it as such.
the installation consists of two components – a set of four metal cymbals of various sizes, which are affixed to the left and right of the entrance portal, and three moving, tilting rainstick sculptures above the entrance to the kammerspiele.
monahan employs the cymbals as resonators – they are repeatedly made to oscillate with the help of mechanical sound transducers. as the sound material feeding the transducers is sourced from recordings of the metal instruments themselves, the installation’s cymbals become veritable self-resonators in a sort of acoustic feedback loop. but, beyond that, the cymbals’ own resonating behaviour alters the sound too: on one hand, they act to filter out certain frequencies, while on the other hand they amplify their own resonating frequencies. this causes the sounds to develop their own characteristics, ones which bear only a faint resemblance to those we typically associate with cymbals. since the cymbals are mounted directly on the building’s facade, their acoustically triggered movement creates a nuanced shadowplay across the front of the building.
the trio of motor-powered rainsticks affixed to the projecting roof of the building’s entrance provide purely analogue accompaniment. their sounds, which trace the movement of the sticks in a strangely delayed fashion, recall the noises of wind or rain. their circular movements don’t obey any fixed choreography, but instead serve as a continually changing counterpoint to the sounds of the cymbals. this interaction allows for the unfolding of continually novel sonic and spatial constellations, which make their presence felt, now quietly, now more assertively, in the acoustic atmosphere of the square in front of the theatre.
