our architectural buildings are acoustical and spatial instruments of sound. most large buildings are outfitted with mechanical systems and moving parts (air conditioning systems, elevators, mechanical accessories, etc.) that produce sound and vibration. therefore the concept that “architecture is frozen music” can be expanded to suggest that architecture can become an instrument in itself. therefore, the building and its mechanical parts can be orchestrated as an ensemble for performance. (g. monahan)
the sound performance “SPACE BECOMES THE INSTRUMENT” interprets the kammerspiele in bad godesberg as an oversized spatial sound instrument. together with canadian artist laura kikauka, city sound artist bonn gordon monahan will stage a playful performative concert installation in the theatre space, one whose choreography is literally derived from listening in on the theatre’s own architecture.
to accomplish this feat, components of the stage-lifting mechanism and lighting system will be equipped with contact microphones. the noises and sounds created by the movement of these mechanical apparatuses will be recorded and projected in real time on a multichannel loudspeaker array positioned throughout the entire theatre space. the audience will be seated in the conventional seating area as well as in the area behind the stage on the opposite side. in the space in between, gordon monahan will animate all manner of visual and acoustic props, including a long piano wire, a sculpture with boiling water and mobile sound instruments, which will be incorporated into the performance. at the conclusion of the performance, loudspeakers will swing back and forth slowly above the stage – the entire theatre will become a sounding space, open to being experienced from a multitude of perspectives.
