erected in 1977, the drinking pavilion at the kurfürstenquelle in bad godesberg’s city park clearly references in its formal language and no-nonsense levity the classical modernist period, which left a lasting mark on the international architectural scene of the last century. whereas bauhaus cultivated an admittedly rationalistic while still holistic approach to architecture, one searches in vain for any indication of the significance of the acoustic in the consideration of the overall atmospheric impression in the modernist school. why did and does the subject of sound apparently have so little significance for architects? for many decades, the finnish architect and architectural theoretician juhani pallasmaa has concerned himself with the topics of atmospheric perception and multisensory experience of architecture. for him, emotional-atmospheric perception represents a consequence of evolution, one which we could also label as a sixth and most important sense. one of his many publications on the subject, “the eyes of the skin – architecture and the senses”, has become a classic and is used as a standard architectural theory textbook around the world. the tone space artist and architect bernhard leitner coined the phrase “sound as construction material” early on. his countless investigations and pieces prove sound’s space-creating characteristics and possibilities in an impressive way. leitner will speak about his tone-space concepts and exemplary works. the permanent sound installation of the bonn city sound artist 2012 andreas oldörp can be heard around the pavilion of the kurfürstenquelle. the floating sounds melt with the architecture. the pavilion gains a new acoustic identity – in such a way as if there had never been another. oldörp will speak about the process of conceiving the installation as well as about his experiences realizing this and other installations during his residency.
