“oto“ – echo/sound, “date“ – point : for many years now these two terms have defined the intellectual core of akio suzuki’s work. since the 1960ies, in the context of his “self-study events”, the japanese artist and sound researcher has been investigating the sonic qualities of both natural sites and architectural spaces by developing a sort of topography of sound. his “echo points”, marked on the pavement by a white symbol which unites the forms of the foot and the ear, indicate special places, places whose sonic qualities seem to capture the atmosphere of the surroundings in some essential way.
»oto – date bonn«: in june 2014 akio suzuki will designate a total of 22 of these echo points along two routes in bonn. those who take him up on his invitation to stroll through diverse, in some cases even secret places in bonn will hear and experience everyday spaces from suzuki’s perspective, a perspective deeply rooted in japanese philosophy, one which always sees the self in relation to its environment. suzuki’s echo points manage to focus awareness, to open familiar places to new forms of perception. you can hear what is always there to be heard. but when you step on one of the marks, you are hearing it for the first time.
