CITY AS SOUND SPACE
from architecture – through public space – into landscape
there is no sound without space and no space without sound. sounds are ever-present in the city. they determine spaces, situations and identities. for decades artists have been using the sounds of the city as material to stage and question constructed space, or to let spaces first emerge through sound – for urban planners or architects however, the designing of or with sound remains uncharted territory. city as sound space seeks a reevaluation of urban space from an aural perspective. the symposium transplants the tradition of critical engagement with urban space long present in architectural and planning discourse, including its strategies and working methods, in to the context of sound art. the aim is to provoke a dialog which will trace the complex relationships and interactions between space and sound, while in the process revealing and testing strategies, methods, possibilities and the potential of working with sound in an artistic and practical context.
the thematic focal points of the work of the city sound artists since 2010 – »sound art and architecture«, »sound art and urban planning«, »sound art and public space«, as well as »sound art and landscape« – will provide the thematic framework for the symposium.
a keynote address from a historical/theoretical perspective will open each session, defining the basic theme, posing questions and serving as a foundation for further exploration. a city sound artist will present their work and reflect critically on their experiences from their working process on site as well as sharing long-term observations about public reception. statements will add further positions from research and from artistic and applied practice. finally, a moderated discussion will concentrate on questions of a new acoustic understanding of the city and especially on the role of sound art as a catalyst in this context. emphasis will be placed on new approaches to the illustration and experiential intermediation of artistic-scientific research and on potential productive feedback loops between disciplines, artists and the city, institutions and audience.
each session will take place in a different part of the city in relation to its respective theme and will be accompanied by a rich program of presentations, performances, guided sound walks, installations and exhibitions during the festival.
