the third part of the symposium once again extends the perspective: we leave the city context and move towards the periphery to explore the landscape. this part of the symposium will be set in motion on board the hospitality ship “filia rheni”, but not without taking a critical look at the often-romanticized term “landscape” and in particular discussing methods and perspectives for investigation and appropriation. non-places, the sub-urban, to occupy a place without filling it, territory as medium – francesco careri will open this discussion with his “walkscape” investigations, a practice of appropriation by movement through space. in addition to various historical references, he calls particular attention to the traditions of the land art movement, whose critical conceptual approaches to “non-object-ness” and to experience-based art and spatial practice also characterize many works of sound art. with her work “rheinklänge” the city sound artist bonn 2013 christina kubisch dealt intensively with the discrepancy between the visual and acoustic reality and perception of the rhine: on one hand there is the idyllic view of the rhine landscape, while on the other hand there are the loud crossings and shipping channels on the river. what influences our view of the landscape and how can we extend, question, change, and renew our perception of it? what constructive artistic strategies for the exploration and appropriation of landscape space are available to us beyond the mere documentation of field recording? kaffe mathews formulates a performative statement and places sonic trail markers. landscape becomes city, city becomes landscape – chris salter has dedicated himself to the subject of complex dynamic environments and sensory feedback systems, transforming the concept of space in to a “possibility-landscape”.
