the bonn city sound artist 2012 is a renowned, nationally and internationally successful sound artist and a pioneer in a subfield of sound art that makes use of natural sounds in public spaces. born in 1959 in lübeck-travemünde, the hamburg artist studied at the university of fine arts of hamburg with henning christiansen, among others.
with a background in object and installation art, andreas oldörp has focused on the interaction between sound and space. he has been creating sound installations and sculptures since 1988 with constant sounds that produce complex and spatially variable sonic textures. in doing so, oldörp does without electronic sound generators; he uses organ pipes or »singing flames« in which gas-fuelled burners cause the air columns in glass cylinders to oscillate.
the constructions, which have been carefully built to highlight their visual aspects, orientate themselves on the configurations of the given architecture and place particular emphasis on spatial markers from which they charge room with sonic energy. the resulting sound architectures are dependent on the acoustic conditions of the room. they can only be experienced when moving through the room. sometimes only a minimal change in location is necessary in order to enter new areas of the sonic space. oldörp understands this as a process of individual »positioning«.
permanent installations in public spaces can be found in enschede, grafschaft in hochsauerland, in hamburg-altona and near meldorf on the North Sea.
